FIRST FEMALE COMPETITORS IN OPEN

History was made at Cheshunt Park Golf Club on Tuesday 26 October when 56 youngsters under the age of 17 teed off a t the start of the 1999 Annual Junior Golf Open. Janet Phipps and Joanne Hawkins became the first female golfers in the competition's history.

The competition is organised by the Borough of Broxbourne and supported by Brophy - the council's grounds maintenance contractor at Cheshunt Park. Contestants made the most of excellent weather and perfect course conditions. The event is arranged to encourage young players and to give them the opportunity to compete against other talented golfers.

The overall winner was 12 year old Christopher Luther, Ben Johnson was second and Christopher Crane finished third. Janet Phipps won the battle of the females to become the first female winner and Joanne Hawkins was a close second.
