Surgeon, Mr Jamie Flanagan and spinal surgery
patient, Judith Jewkes, both keen golfers.
A
national golf competition, open to all orthopaedic surgeons and
orthopaedic surgery patients, has been launched by the Wishbone
Trust, which raises funds for medical research. Called Golf 2000,
there will be 12 regional heats in some of the country's most prestigious
golf venues - eight across England, one in Wales and three in Scotland
- during April and May 2000. The final will be staged on the fabulous
new Marquess Course at Woburn Abbey in October 2000.
The
Wishbone Trust provides funds for orthopaedic surgery research in
hospitals, medical centres and universities throughout the UK. In
just eight years, the Trust has given more than £4 million
in grants to orthopaedic researchers. Much of this money was raised
by former patients wishing to give their thanks in a tangible way.
The Trust held a one day golfing event for surgeons and patients
at the Stockley Park Golf Club, Uxbridge last summer and was delighted
with the enthusiastic response. As a result, plans were made for
this national Stableford competition.
Teams
of four are invited to participate and the tournament is open to
consultant orthopaedic surgeons, members of their medical staff,
former orthopaedic surgery patients, their families, friends and
supporters. Players should play to an acceptable standard, and on
the day, there will be a maximum handicap of 32 for women and 24
for men.
The
charity has also received best wishes from Jack Nicklaus, who had
a hip joint replacement in January. A great friend of Peter Alliss,
the renowned golf commentator, whose wife Jackie, is helping to
organise the event for the Trust, Jack writes: "Once the surgery
was over, I never looked back! Play well and enjoy the camaraderie.
Good luck to the 12 finalists who will go on to compete at Woburn,
and to all of you, best wishes for continued good health and the
happiness of an active life. Good golfing."
