SUN
LONGEST DAY CHALLENGE AIMS TO RAISE
OVER £200,000 FOR YOUNG PEOPLE'S CHARITY
The
two former England Captains, Gary Linker and Allan Lamb, will spearhead
hundreds of golfers this summer by undertaking the Sun Longest Day
Challenge, The Marathon of Golf, sponsored by Sun Microsystems.
On Tuesday 13 July - from dawn until dusk - Linekar and Lamb will
play 72 holes staring at Le Touquet (France), followed by Moor Park
(England) and St Pierre (Wales), and finishing at Gleneagles (Scotland).
Golfers
of all ages and varying handicaps will also play a minimum of 72
holes in one day on or as near to the longest day of the year (Monday
21 June). Each golfer will collect pledges from friends, family
and colleagues, every single penny of which will benefit The Childrens
Society in England and Wales, Quarriers in Scotland or a charity
of their choice.
At
each of the venues the celebrities visit, they will play alongside
Barclays Bank guests who will also be attempting their own 72 hole
marathon to help The Childrens' Society. £200,000 is the target
figure to be raised by these gallant efforts and by individual golfers
throughout the country.
All
those participating in the Sun Longest Day Challenge receive a commemorative
certificate recording the amount raised and signed by the English
captains. Those who raise over £350 also receive a souvenir
golf shirt and a weekend golfing hotel break for two people awaits
the highest individual fundraiser.
Linker
and Lamb follow in the footsteps of Ian Botham, Gavin Hastings and
Jeremy Guscott, Stephen Hendry and Steven Redgrave and Dennis Taylor
and Rory Underwood, who have all successfully completed a four-country
challenge The Sun Longest Day Challenge has now raised over £320,000
for charity since its inception in 1993.
