WEEKLY / GOLF ILLUSTRATED
1999 GOLD VASE
In its 90th
year of running, Mark Side, this year's Brabazon Trophy winner,
claimed the Golf Weekly / Golf Illustrated Golf Vase on Saturday
28th August at Walton Heath.
Mark scored
rounds of par 72 on The Old Course and 66 (a course record) on The
New, giving him a total of 138 - six under par). He held off a strong
field including Walker Cup veteran Gary Wolstenholme and Mid-amateur
Champion John Kemp.
The tournament
looked close to a playoff until Nick Soto from Northants County
missed by one stroke on the final hole.
"Winning
the Gold Vase caps a very consistent season for me." said Side.
"My first round was all fours and threes with no bogeys and
I got away with a couple of bad shots thanks to putts that dropped
at the right time".
Side is due
to make his full England debut in the Home Internationals and has
recently applied for qualification for the European Tour.
"I've applied
to pre-qualify at either Five Lakes of Chart Hills and after that
we'll have to see", said Mark.
