Golf Lessons vs. Self-Taught: What's Your Take?

Hey everyone! I’ve been dabbling in golf for a couple of months now and I’m curious – do you think it’s better to take formal golf lessons or go the self-taught route? Would love to hear your experiences and opinions!

I’ve been playing golf for over a decade, and I started with lessons. Honestly, they made a huge difference. A pro can spot issues with your swing that you might never notice on your own. It’s a bit of an investment, but worth it in my opinion!

Totally agree. I tried learning on my own first and it was a struggle. Once I got some lessons, the improvement was noticeable.

I think it really depends on your learning style. Some people thrive under the guidance of an instructor, while others prefer to learn through practice and experimentation.

I went the self-taught route and watched tons of YouTube videos and read books. It worked for me, but I can see why people would opt for lessons too.

Lessons can be quite expensive though. Do you all think the cost is justified?

Absolutely, but think of it as an investment in your game. You’ll likely end up spending less on corrective measures down the line.

I mixed both – took a few initial lessons to get the basics down and then practiced on my own. This way, I kept the costs down but still made sure I wasn’t developing bad habits.

For beginners, I’d definitely recommend at least a few lessons. It’s so easy to develop bad habits that are hard to correct later on.

This balanced approach sounds great! Maybe I’ll try that.

From personal experience, my game improved drastically after taking lessons. Maybe it’s just me, but swinging and missing less often is a huge win!

Self-teaching can be frustrating, but there’s a sense of accomplishment when you nail something on your own. I think it’s a journey worth considering if you’re patient.

Haha, definitely not just you. I think we all can relate to that feeling!

One key advantage of formal lessons is the immediate feedback. It’s something you can’t get from books or videos.

Has anyone tried virtual lessons? Saw a few options online and was wondering if they’re effective.

I’ve done a couple! They are great for specific questions or issues, but nothing beats in-person for comprehensive learning.

Virtual lessons helped me during the pandemic. Not as good as in-person, but better than nothing!

Just a random thought, but no instructor can cure my epic slice😂 Still working on that!

Same here! At times it feels like a mystery that I just can’t solve.

After taking lessons, I found that my enjoyment of the game increased because I wasn’t as frustrated with my mistakes. Has anyone else felt this way?
