Brandon Stone takes College route to top 25 September 12, 2012
It didn’t take South Africa’s Brandon Stone long to settle into college golf. He needed just 54 holes to make his mark.
Stone made a victorious debut for the University of Texas in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Georgia. Rounds of 69, 63 and 72 for a 12-under-par total of 204 gave the Pretoria native a two-shot victory over teammate Jordan Spieth and TJ Mitchell of the University of Georgia. Texas, the reigning NCAA champions, won the team title as a result.
Stone is the world’s leading South African amateur. He improves that status on this week’s World Amateur Golf Ranking by nine places, moving to world number 21. Spieth remains the world’s sixth best amateur. Mitchell jumps 111 places to 179th.
Denny McCarthy of the United States won the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove Illinois. The University of Virginia player began the final round in joint 6th place, three shots off the lead after successive 2-over-par 74s. However, he posted a closing 68 to win by three shots over Scott Fernandez and Michael McGee.
McCarthy moves 23 places on this week’s ranking to 65th. Fernandez improves 22 spots to 151st, while McGee moves a massive 718 places to 1,099th.
Germany’s Christopher Carstensen won the Austrian International Amateur Championship by two strokes over Amateur Championship runner-up Matthias Schwab and Switzerland’s Edouard Amacher. Schwab held a three shot lead heading into the final round, but the young Austrian closed with a 2-over-par 74.
Carstensen improves 1,072 places this week to 2,106th. Schwab remains in the world top 10, in 10th place, while Amacher goes to 255th, an improvement of 24 places.
