Hey everyone! I’ve been golfing for a while now, and I’ve noticed that there are a lot of funny and quirky terms used in the sport. Some of them can be confusing for new golfers, so I thought it would be fun to start a discussion and share some of the most amusing golf lingo. What are some of your favorite golf terms and what do they mean? I’ll start - one that always cracks me up is ‘hooking the ball’. It sounds like something you’d do to catch a fish, not a golf shot! Anyway, let’s hear your golf funny terms and have a laugh together. Looking forward to some great conversation!
Golf has some really funny and unique terms! One of my favorites is ‘knickers’, which refers to the short pants golfers used to wear back in the day. They look so silly by today’s standards!
“Mulligan” is another classic golf term - it’s when you get to re-do a shot without penalty. Perfect for those of us who mess up on the first try!
“Shank” is another amusing one - when you hit the ball off the hosel of the club and it goes way offline. Definitely a humbling moment on the course!
I remember the first time I heard someone refer to a “banana ball” - it’s when your shot curves dramatically to the left or right. Sounds like a fun way to describe a wayward shot!
“Snowman” is a hilarious term for scoring an 8 on a hole. It looks just like a little 0 on your scorecard! Golf can definitely bring out the creativity in people.
Haha, I love that one! It’s a perfect visual. Golf has so many fun ways to describe the game.
I’m always amused by the term “chunk” - when you hit the ground before the ball and send it dribbling a few feet. We’ve all been there!
What about “skull” - when you hit the ball way too low and it skips across the ground? That’s gotta be one of the most frustrating shots in golf!
“Blading” the ball is another funny one - when you hit it super thin and it just zooms across the green. I’ve definitely done that a few times!
Oh yeah, blading it is the worst! Your ball just takes off like a rocket, usually straight into a bunker or the woods.
I always enjoy hearing someone describe a shot as a “worm burner” - when the ball just skims along the ground. Definitely not the intended trajectory!
“Topped” shots are pretty funny too - when you literally just hit the top of the ball and it dribbles a few yards. Gotta love those ego-deflating moments on the course!
The term “shank” always cracks me up. It’s so descriptive of that embarrassing shot where the ball just shoots off the hosel sideways. Golf has the best vocabulary!
You’re so right, the golf lexicon is truly unique and hilarious. Shanking one is just the worst - so unpredictable and awkward! But it makes for a good laugh later.
I always thought “duck hook” was a funny one - when you hit the ball low and sharp to the left. Sounds like something a bird would do!
Do any of you have a favorite unique golf term? I’m always discovering new ones that make me chuckle.
“Shank” is definitely up there for me - it’s just such a vivid and comical way to describe a bad shot. But I also really like “duff” for when you hit the ground way behind the ball. Golf terminology is the best!
“Skull” and “blade” are two of my favorites. They just sound so intense and dramatic for such simple mistakes. The way golfers describe their mishits is truly an art form.
This thread is making me nostalgic for my early days of golf, when every other shot seemed to be a “duff” or a “skull”. Those terms really capture the humbling nature of the game.
