If you’re looking for beginner-friendly public courses in New Jersey, I highly recommend the public courses at Mercer County Park. The fairways are wide, and the staff is super welcoming! They also have excellent practice facilities for honing your skills.
I’ve heard good things about Mercer! Another great option is the Rancocas Golf Club. They have a really supportive atmosphere and a nice driving range to practice.

Ocean County is a solid pick! But I also suggest checking out the par-3 course at Berkeley Island State Park. It’s short, allows for easy play, and perfect for beginners to get comfortable on the course!

If you’re worried about grass conditions, stay away from the cheap municipal courses. I tried one, and it was a disaster! But I agree with others here - easy-going spots like Mercer are the way to go.
I had a laugh when I read about those disastrous courses! Sometimes I think they should offer a “novice disaster” rate! Let’s stick to the recommended courses like Rancocas for an easier day out.
